Sahih al-Bukhari 1404 (Book 24, Hadith 9) #1349
The Purifying Power of Zakat

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when the verses of Zakat were revealed, Allah made it a purifier of property.

Narrated Khalid bin Aslam: We went out with 'Abdullah bin 'Umar and a bedouin said (to 'Abdullah), "Tell me about Allah's saying: "And those who hoard up gold and silver (Al-Kanz - money, gold, silver etc., the Zakat of which has not been paid) and spend it not in the Way of Allah (V.9:34)". Ibn 'Umar said, "Whoever hoarded them and did not pay the Zakat thereof, then woe to him. But these holy Verses were revealed before the Verses of Zakat. So when the Verses of Zakat were revealed, Allah made Zakat a purifier of the property".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance and power of paying zakat. It was narrated by Khalid bin Aslam who went out with Abdullah bin Umar and a bedouin asked him about Allah's saying regarding those who hoard up gold and silver without paying zakat. Ibn Umar said that whoever hoarded them without paying the zakat would be in trouble. However, these verses were revealed before the verses of zakat so when they were revealed, Allah made it a purifier for one's property. Paying zakat is an important part of being a Muslim as it helps to purify one's wealth and possessions while also helping those in need. It is also an act of worship which brings us closer to God as we are fulfilling His commandment by giving back to society what He has given us in abundance.
