Sahih Muslim 1929a (Book 34, Hadith 1) #12077
Rules of Hunting and Eating Game Animals

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the rules of hunting and eating game animals.

'Adi b. Hatim reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, I set off trained dogs and they catch for me (the game) and I recite the name of Allah over it (I slaughter the game by reciting Bismillah-i-Allah-o-Akbar), whereupon he said: When you set off your trained dogs, if you recited the name of Allah (while setting them off), then eat (the game). I said: Even if they (the trained dogs) kill that (the game)? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Even if these kill, but (on the condition) that no other dog, which you did not set off (along with your dogs), participates (in catching the game). I said to him: I throw Mi'rad, a heavy featherless blunt arrow, for hunting and killing (the game). Thereupon he said: When you throw Mi'rad, and it pierces, then eat, but if it falls flatly (and beats the game to death), then do not eat that.

QUICK LESSONS:
Recite Bismillah before setting off trained dogs or throwing a blunt arrow called Mi’rad for hunting; make sure only your own dogs join in catching the game; make sure that any arrows thrown pierce an animal before eating it; treat all creatures under your dominion with respect and responsibility; be mindful of your actions when dealing with animals .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the rules for hunting and eating game animals according to Islamic teachings. It is narrated by 'Adi b. Hatim who asked Prophet Muhammad about what he should do when setting off trained dogs to catch game or throwing a blunt arrow called Mi'rad for hunting and killing the game. The Prophet said that if one recites the name of Allah while setting off their trained dogs then they can eat whatever they catch, but if another dog joins in that was not set off with them then it is not permissible to eat it. Similarly, if one throws a Mi'rad and it pierces an animal then they can eat it but if it falls flatly on an animal then they cannot eat it as this would be considered cruel treatment towards animals which is forbidden in Islam. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our actions when dealing with animals as we are responsible for their wellbeing even though we have dominion over them according to Islamic teachings.
