Sahih Muslim 1929b (Book 34, Hadith 2) #12078
Hunting with Trained Dogs

SUMMARY: When hunting with trained dogs, one should only eat the game caught by the dog if it has not eaten any part of it and no other dogs have joined in.

'Adi b. Hatim reported: I asked Allah's Messenger saying: We are a people who hunt with these (trained) dogs, then (what should we do)? Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: When you set of your trained dogs having recited the name of Allah, then eat what these (hounds) have caught for you, even if it (the game) is killed, provided (the hunting dog) has not eaten (any part of the game). If it has eaten (the game), then you don't eat it as I fear that it might have caught for its own self. And do not eat it if other dogs have joined your trained dogs.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about hunting with trained dogs and what to do when they catch something. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when setting off on a hunt, one should recite the name of Allah before doing so. If the hound catches something, then one can eat it as long as it has not eaten any part of it itself or if other dogs have joined in on the hunt. This teaches us to be mindful and respectful of animals and their rights while also being aware that we are allowed to use them for our own benefit as long as we do so responsibly and ethically. We must also remember to always thank Allah for His blessings before consuming anything He provides us with, even if we obtain them through animals such as these hounds.
