Sahih Muslim 1574g (Book 22, Hadith 68) #11153
The Reward of Keeping Dogs

SUMMARY: Keeping a pet dog for any other purpose than hunting, watching fields or herds will result in a loss of reward with God.

Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) narrated Allah's Messenger as saying: He who kept a dog other than one meant for watching the fields or herds or hunting would lose one qirat every day out of his reward (with God).

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep dogs only if they are meant for watching fields or herds or hunting .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the reward that one can receive from Allah if they keep a dog. It is narrated by Ibn Umar that Allah's Messenger said that anyone who keeps a dog other than one meant for watching the fields or herds or hunting would lose one qirat every day out of his reward with God. A qirat is an amount of reward given to someone by Allah and it can be seen as an indication of how much good deeds someone has done in their life. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that keeping dogs for any other purpose than those mentioned will result in a decrease in our rewards with God. We should therefore be mindful when deciding to keep pets and ensure we are doing so for the right reasons.
