The Consequences of Keeping a Pet Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a pet dog for any purpose other than herding or hunting will result in the loss of two qirat of one's deeds every day.

Salim b. Abdullah reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Messenger said: Whosoever amongst the owners of the house keeps a dog other than one meant for watching the herd or for hunting loses two qirat of his deeds every day.
حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ، اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ أَيُّمَا أَهْلِ دَارٍ اتَّخَذُوا كَلْبًا إِلاَّ كَلْبَ مَاشِيَةٍ أَوْ كَلْبَ صَائِدٍ نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ‏"‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of keeping a pet dog for any purpose other than herding or hunting. According to this hadith, if someone keeps such a pet dog, they will lose two qirat of their deeds every day. A qirat is an amount that is equal to one-fourth part of an individual’s good deeds and it can be earned by doing good things like helping others and being kind to them. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that we should not keep pets unless they are necessary for herding or hunting as it can lead to the loss of our good deeds which are essential for our success in life and hereafter.
