Sahih Muslim 1575a (Book 22, Hadith 69) #11154
The Consequences of Keeping an Unnecessary Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog that is not used for hunting, watching animals, or guarding fields will result in a loss of reward.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: He who kept a dog which is neither meant for hunting nor for watching the animals nor for watching the fields would lose two qirat every day out of his reward; and there is no mention of the fields in the hadith transmitted by Abu Tahir.
