The Obligation of Fasting During Ramadan

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), people were allowed to fast according to their own liking in Ramadan, but after a verse was revealed, it became obligatory for all Muslims to fast during Ramadan.

Salama b. Akwa' reported: We, during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah , in one month of Ramadan (observed fast according to our liking). He who wished to fast lasted and he who wished to break broke it and fed a needy person as an expiation 1544 till this verse was revealed:" He who witnesses among you the month (of Ramadan) he should observe fast during it" (ii. 184).
حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ سَوَّادٍ الْعَامِرِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ، الْحَارِثِ عَنْ بُكَيْرِ بْنِ الأَشَجِّ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ، مَوْلَى سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الأَكْوَعِ، - رضى الله عنه - أَنَّهُ قَالَ كُنَّا فِي رَمَضَانَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ مَنْ شَاءَ صَامَ وَمَنْ شَاءَ أَفْطَرَ فَافْتَدَى بِطَعَامِ مِسْكِينٍ حَتَّى أُنْزِلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ ‏{‏ فَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ‏}‏

This hadith is about the obligation of fasting during the month of Ramadan for all Muslims. During the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), people were allowed to observe fast according to their own liking in this month, but after a verse was revealed from Allah, it became obligatory for all Muslims to observe fast during this month. As an expiation for those who broke their fast before this revelation, they were asked to feed a needy person as an act of charity and kindness. This hadith teaches us that we should always follow Allah's commands and be obedient towards Him even if we don't understand why something is being asked from us at first. It also teaches us about charity and kindness towards others which is one of the most important values in Islam.
