Sahih Muslim 1145a (Book 13, Hadith 191) #9830
Abrogation of Verses in the Quran

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that when a verse of the Quran was revealed, those who wanted to fast did so and those who didn't want to fast could eat and make up for it until another verse was revealed which abrogated the first one.

Salama b. Akwa' (Allah be pleased with him) reported that when this verse was revealed: "And as for those who can fast (but do not) expiation is the feeding of a needy person" (ii. 183), (he who liked to observe fast did observe it) and he who felt reluctant to observe it ate and expiated till the verse was revealed which abrogated it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow verses from the Qur'an if you choose too
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when a verse from the Quran is revealed, Muslims have two options; they can either choose to follow it or not. If they choose not to follow it, then they must make up for their decision by feeding a needy person. However, if another verse is later revealed which abrogates the first one, then this new ruling takes precedence over the old one and Muslims must abide by this new ruling instead. This hadith teaches us that we should always be open minded and willing to accept change as Allah's rulings are ever changing according to His will.
