Fasting on Sighting the New Moon

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of fasting and breaking fast on sighting the new moon, and if it is not visible due to clouds, then counting thirty days.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Observe fast on sighting it (the new moon) and break it on sighting it. But if (due to clouds) the actual position of the month is concealed from you, you should then count thirty (days).
وَحَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، - رضى الله عنه - يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمِّيَ عَلَيْكُمُ الشَّهْرُ فَعُدُّوا ثَلاَثِينَ

This hadith emphasizes the importance of fasting during Ramadan. It teaches us that when we sight the new moon, we should start our fast and break it when we sight it again. However, if due to clouds or other reasons, we are unable to see the new moon then we should count thirty days instead. This hadith also teaches us that even though there may be obstacles in our way of fulfilling religious obligations, there are always ways around them which can help us stay connected with Allah SWT.
