Observing Fasting During Ramadan

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of fasting during Ramadan and how to observe it if the new moon is not visible.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Observe fast on sighting it (the new moon) and break (fast) on sighting it (the new moon), but if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the number (of thirty).
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَلاَّمٍ الْجُمَحِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الرَّبِيعُ، - يَعْنِي ابْنَ مُسْلِمٍ - عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، - وَهُوَ ابْنُ زِيَادٍ - عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، - رضى الله عنه - أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ فَإِنْ غُمِّيَ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَكْمِلُوا الْعَدَدَ

This hadith explains the importance of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. It teaches us that when we sight the new moon, we should start our fast and break it when we sight it again. However, if due to cloudy skies, one cannot see the new moon then they should complete thirty days of fasting. This hadith emphasizes on following Islamic teachings and being mindful of our religious obligations even in difficult times such as cloudy weather conditions. It also teaches us to be patient and have faith in Allah’s will even when things don’t go as planned.
