Ablution Not Necessary for Eating

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was presented with food after returning from the restroom and was asked to perform ablution, to which he replied that it wasn't necessary as he wasn't going to pray.

Ibn 'Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah went to the privy and when he came back, he was presented with food. It was said to him; Messenger of Allah, wouldn't you perform ablution. He said: Why, am I to say prayer?

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of your hygiene and cleanliness even when you are not performing any religious rituals or activities.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of ablution or wudu before prayer. It is narrated by Ibn 'Abbas that when the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) returned from the restroom, he was offered food and asked if he would perform ablution. He replied that it wasn't necessary as he wasn't going to pray. This hadith teaches us that although wudu is important for prayer, it isn't necessary for eating or other activities. We should be mindful of our hygiene and cleanliness even when we are not performing any religious rituals or activities.
