Punishment for Illegal Sexual Intercourse

SUMMARY: A man who committed an illegal sexual intercourse was stoned to death, and the Prophet ﷺ spoke well of him and offered his funeral prayer.

Narrated Jabir: A man from the tribe of Aslam came to the Prophet and confessed that he had committed an illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet turned his face away from him till the man bore witness against himself four times. The Prophet said to him, "Are you mad?" He said "No". He said, "Are you married?" He said, "Yes". Then the Prophet ordered that he be stoned to death, and he was stoned to death at the Musalla. When the stones troubled him, he fled, but he was caught and was stoned till he died. The Prophet spoke well of him and offered his funeral prayer.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic laws strictly ; Bear witness against oneself four times ; Confess one's wrongdoings
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man from the tribe of Aslam who confessed to committing an illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet Muhammad turned his face away from him until he bore witness against himself four times. The Prophet asked if he was mad or married, and when he said no to being mad and yes to being married, the Prophet ordered that he be stoned to death at the Musalla. When the stones troubled him, he fled but was caught again and stoned till he died. Despite this punishment for his crime, the Prophet still spoke well of him and offered his funeral prayer as a sign of respect for all Muslims even in death. This hadith teaches us that although we must punish those who commit wrongdoings according to Islamic law, we should still show respect towards them as fellow Muslims even after they have been punished for their crimes.
