Follow God’s laws as revealed in scripture rather than man-made laws or innovations which are not sanctioned by God Almighty . Show mercy even in dire circumstances .

This hadith is about a Jew and a Jewess who were brought before the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on charges of committing an illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet ﷺ asked them what was the legal punishment for this sin in their book, which was the Torah. They replied that their priests had innovated a punishment of blackening faces with charcoal and Tajbiya. Abdullah bin Salam then asked for the Torah to be brought and when it was read it revealed that they should be stoned to death according to God's law. So Allah's Apostle ordered that they both be stoned and Ibn 'Umar witnessed them being stoned at Balat while one of them sheltered the other from harm. This hadith teaches us that we must follow God's laws as revealed in scripture rather than man-made laws or innovations which are not sanctioned by God Almighty. It also teaches us mercy as one of those being punished showed mercy towards another even in such dire circumstances.
