Sahih al-Bukhari 6805 (Book 86, Hadith 34) #6547
Punishment for Theft & Murder

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ ordered a group of people from 'Ukl to drink the camels' urine and milk as a medicine, but they became healthy and killed the shepherd and drove away the camels. As punishment, their hands and legs were cut off, their eyes were branded with heated iron pieces, and they were thrown at Al-Harra without water.

Narrated Anas bin Malik: A group of people from 'Ukl (or Uraina) tribe ----but I think he said that they were from 'Ukl came to Medina and (they became ill, so) the Prophet ordered them to go to the herd of (Milch) she-camels and told them to go out and drink the camels' urine and milk (as a medicine). So they went and drank it, and when they became healthy, they killed the shepherd and drove away the camels. This news reached the Prophet early in the morning, so he sent (some) men in their pursuit and they were captured and brought to the Prophet before midday. He ordered to cut off their hands and legs and their eyes to be branded with heated iron pieces and they were thrown at Al-Harra, and when they asked for water to drink, they were not given water. (Abu Qilaba said, "Those were the people who committed theft and murder and reverted to disbelief after being believers (Muslims), and fought against Allah and His Apostle").

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey God’s commands ; Respect life ; Be grateful ; Leave justice up to God

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a group of people who committed theft and murder in Medina. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered them to drink camel's urine and milk as a medicine but instead of being grateful for his mercy, they became healthy again and killed the shepherd who was taking care of them. As punishment for their actions, Allah's Messenger ﷺ ordered that their hands be cut off, their legs be amputated, their eyes be branded with heated iron pieces before being thrown at Al-Harra without water. This hadith teaches us that we must always obey Allah's commands even if it seems difficult or strange because He knows what is best for us in this life as well as in the hereafter. It also teaches us that we must never take justice into our own hands; rather we should leave it up to Allah who will judge each person according to his/her deeds on Judgment Day. Finally it reminds us that stealing or killing are serious crimes which will not go unpunished by Allah Almighty no matter how powerful one may think he/she is on earth.
