Sahih al-Bukhari 6804 (Book 86, Hadith 33) #6546
Punishment for Theft and Murder

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ punished a group of people who stole and killed the shepherd of Allah's Apostle, by branding their eyes, cutting off their hands and feet, and not giving them water until they died.

Narrated Anas: A group of people from 'Ukl (tribe) came to the Prophet and they were living with the people of As- Suffa, but they became ill as the climate of Medina did not suit them, so they said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Provide us with milk". The Prophet said, I see no other way for you than to use the camels of Allah's Apostle". So they went and drank the milk and urine of the camels, (as medicine) and became healthy and fat. Then they killed the shepherd and took the camels away. When a help-seeker came to Allah's Apostle, he sent some men in their pursuit, and they were captured and brought before mid day. The Prophet ordered for some iron pieces to be made red hot, and their eyes were branded with them and their hands and feet were cut off and were not cauterized. Then they were put at a place called Al- Harra, and when they asked for water to drink they were not given till they died. (Abu Qilaba said, "Those people committed theft and murder and fought against Allah and His Apostle")

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment that was given to a group of people from 'Ukl tribe who committed theft and murder. They were living with the people of As- Suffa but became ill due to the climate in Medina. When they asked for milk, the Prophet provided them with camels from his own herd. However, they killed the shepherd and took away the camels. When help-seekers came to Allah's Messenger he sent some men in pursuit of them and when they were captured they were branded with red hot iron pieces on their eyes, had their hands and feet cut off without cauterization before being put at a place called Al- Harra where no water was given until they died as punishment for their crimes. This hadith teaches us that stealing or taking something without permission is wrong as it can lead to serious consequences such as death if done repeatedly or if it involves murder or other serious crimes like fighting against Allah or His Messenger. It also teaches us that justice must be served even if it means punishing someone severely for what he/she has done wrong so that others may learn from it too.
