Fulfilling Vows in Pre-Islamic Period

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ encouraged fulfilling a vow made during the Pre-Islamic Period of ignorance.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: 'Umar said "O Allah's Messenger ! I vowed to perform I'tikaf for one night in Al-Masjid-al-Haram, during the Pre-Islamic Period of ignorance (before embracing Islam)".The Prophet said, "Fulfill your vow". Ibn 'Umar said to the lady, "Pray on her behalf". Ibn 'Abbas said the same.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill your vows
EXPLANATIONS:
During the time before Islam, people would make vows to do certain things as an act of worship. In this hadith, Umar mentioned that he had made a vow to perform I'tikaf for one night in Al-Masjid-al-Haram. The Prophet encouraged him to fulfill his vow and Ibn Abbas also agreed with this opinion. This teaches us that even if we make a pledge or obligation before embracing Islam, it is still important to fulfill it as an act of obedience and respect towards Allah. It also shows us the importance of keeping our promises no matter what religion we follow or what period of time we are living in.
