Sahih al-Bukhari 6108 (Book 78, Hadith 135) #5864
The Forbidden Oath of Swearing By Fathers

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger forbade people from swearing by their fathers and instead encouraged them to swear by Allah or remain silent.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: that he found 'Umar bin Al-Khattab in a group of people and he was swearing by his father. So Allah's Messenger called them, saying, "Verily! Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers. If one has to take an oath, he should swear by Allah or otherwise keep quiet".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take an Oath Only In The Name Of Allah .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of taking an oath only in the name of Allah and not in the name of one's father. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar that he found Umar bin Al-Khattab in a group of people and he was swearing by his father, so Prophet Muhammad called them saying that it is forbidden to swear by one's father, instead if one has to take an oath they should swear only in the name of Allah or otherwise keep quiet. This hadith teaches us that we should always be mindful when taking an oath as it is a serious matter and should be done with utmost respect for God Almighty. We must remember that our words have power and can have consequences, so we must use them wisely when making promises or commitments. Furthermore, this hadith also reminds us to show respect for our parents as they are deserving of it but not at the expense of disrespecting God Almighty who is above all else.
