Sahih al-Bukhari 5481 (Book 72, Hadith 7) #5257
The Reward of Keeping Dogs

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog for any purpose other than hunting or guarding livestock will reduce one's reward.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: I heard the Prophet saying, "If someone keeps a dog neither for hunting, nor for guarding livestock, the reward (for his good deeds) will be reduced by two Qirats per day".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow God's commands and use animals only when necessary

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the reward that one can receive from Allah for their good deeds. It states that if someone keeps a dog for any purpose other than hunting or guarding livestock then the reward they receive from Allah will be reduced by two Qirats per day. A Qirat is an amount of reward given to people who do good deeds and it is equal to a large amount of money. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that we should not keep dogs unless it is necessary and only use them for specific purposes such as hunting or guarding livestock. We should also remember that our actions have consequences and if we do something wrong then our rewards may be reduced accordingly.
