The Consequences of Keeping a Dog

SUMMARY: Keeping a dog for any purpose other than guarding livestock or hunting will reduce one's good deeds.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: Allah's Messenger said, "If someone keeps a dog neither for guarding livestock, nor for hunting, his good deeds will decrease (in reward) by two Qirats a day'.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا إِلاَّ كَلْبَ مَاشِيَةٍ أَوْ ضَارٍ، نَقَصَ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ قِيرَاطَانِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the consequences of keeping a dog. According to the Prophet Muhammad, if someone keeps a dog for any purpose other than guarding livestock or hunting, their good deeds will be reduced by two Qirats per day. A Qirat is an ancient unit of measurement that was used to measure gold and silver coins in Arabia during the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Therefore, this hadith teaches us that it is important to think carefully before we keep animals as pets and make sure that we are doing so for beneficial purposes such as protecting our property or providing food for our families. It also teaches us that even small actions can have big consequences on our rewards in the afterlife.
