The Consequences of Keeping Pet Dogs

SUMMARY: Keeping a pet dog that is not used for hunting or guarding will result in a deduction of two Qirat from one's good deeds.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet said, "Whoever keeps a (pet) dog which is neither a watch dog nor a hunting dog, will get a daily deduction of two Qirat from his good deeds".
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ مَنِ اقْتَنَى كَلْبًا لَيْسَ بِكَلْبِ مَاشِيَةٍ أَوْ ضَارِيَةٍ، نَقَصَ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ مِنْ عَمَلِهِ قِيرَاطَانِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Ibn 'Umar, speaks about the consequences of keeping pet dogs. According to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, if someone keeps a pet dog that is neither used as a watch dog nor for hunting, they will have two Qirats deducted from their good deeds every day. A Qirat is an ancient unit of measurement and it can be interpreted as meaning that the person’s reward for their good deeds will be reduced significantly.
