Testing Believing Women Emigrants

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) tested believing women who came to him as emigrants and accepted their pledge of allegiance according to the conditions set by Allah.

Narrated 'Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) When believing women came to the Prophet as emigrants, he used to test them in accordance with the order of Allah'.O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them . . '. (60:10) So if anyone of those believing women accepted the above mentioned conditions, she accepted the conditions of faith. When they agreed on those conditions and confessed that with their tongues, Allah's Messenger would say to them, "Go, I have accepted your oath of allegiance (for Islam). By Allah, and hand of Allah's Messenger never touched the hand of any woman, but he only used to take their pledge of allegiance orally. By Allah, Allah's Messenger did not take the pledge of allegiance of the women except in accordance with what Allah had ordered him. When he accepted their pledge of allegiance he would say to them, "I have accepted your oath of allegiance".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow what Allah has commanded ; Respect boundaries between men and women ; Carefully examine before accepting someone into one's faith or community ; Take an oath of allegiance verbally instead of physically touching someone else's hand

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ tested believing women who came to him as emigrants. According to this hadith, when these women agreed on certain conditions and confessed them with their tongues, Allah's Messenger ﷺ would accept their oath of allegiance for Islam. He never touched any woman's hand but only took their pledge orally. This was done in accordance with what Allah had ordered him in (60:10) Surah Al-Mumtahanah verse 10 which states “O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them . . .” This hadith teaches us that we should always follow what Allah has commanded us and that we should be careful when accepting people into our faith or community. It also shows us that even though it is permissible for men and women to interact in certain ways, there are still boundaries that must be respected between them.
