Sahih al-Bukhari 5273 (Book 68, Hadith 22) #5051
Divorce in Islam

SUMMARY: A woman came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and asked for a divorce from her husband because she was unhappy with his character and religion. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked her to return the garden that her husband had given her as Mahr, and then told Thabit to accept it back and divorce his wife.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The wife of Thabit bin Qais came to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! I do not blame Thabit for defects in his character or his religion, but I, being a Muslim, dislike to behave in un-Islamic manner (if I remain with him)". On that Allah's Messenger said (to her), "Will you give back the garden which your husband has given you (as Mahr)?" She said, "Yes". Then the Prophet said to Thabit, "O Thabit! Accept your garden, and divorce her once".

QUICK LESSONS:
Try your best at resolving any issues between you and your spouse before taking drastic measures such as getting divorced; Be fair & just towards each other when getting divorced by returning any gifts or dowries given during marriage so no one is left feeling cheated or taken advantage of during this difficult time .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about divorce in Islam. According to this hadith, if a woman is unhappy with her husband's character or religion she can ask for a divorce. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked the woman to return the garden that was given as mahr by her husband before granting the divorce. He also instructed Thabit bin Qais to accept back his gift of mahr before divorcing his wife. This shows us that even though Islam allows for people to get divorced if they are not happy in their marriage, it still encourages couples to try their best at resolving any issues between them before taking such drastic measures as getting divorced. It also teaches us that when getting divorced we should be fair and just towards each other by returning any gifts or dowries given during marriage so no one is left feeling cheated or taken advantage of during this difficult time.
