Sahih al-Bukhari 5271, 5272 (Book 68, Hadith 21) #5050
The Punishment for Illegal Sexual Intercourse

SUMMARY: A man who committed illegal sexual intercourse was stoned to death after confessing four times.

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man from Bani Aslam came to Allah's Messenger while he was in the mosque and called (the Prophet ) saying, "O Allah's Messenger ! I have committed illegal sexual intercourse". On that the Prophet turned his face from him to the other side, whereupon the man moved to the side towards which the Prophet had turned his face, and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! I have committed illegal sexual intercourse". The Prophet turned his face (from him) to the other side whereupon the man moved to the side towards which the Prophet had turned his face, and repeated his statement. The Prophet turned his face (from him) to the other side again. The man moved again (and repeated his statement) for the fourth time. So when the man had given witness four times against himself, the Prophet called him and said, "Are you insane?" He replied, "No". The Prophet then said (to his companions), "Go and stone him to death". The man was a married one. Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari said: I was one of those who stoned him. We stoned him at the Musalla ('Id praying place) in Medina. When the stones hit him with their sharp edges, he fled, but we caught him at Al-Harra and stoned him till he died.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment for illegal sexual intercourse, which is stoning to death. According to this hadith, a man from Bani Aslam came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the mosque and confessed that he had committed illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet ﷺ turned his face away from him three times, but each time the man repeated his confession until it was witnessed four times. After this, the Prophet ﷺ asked if he was insane and when he said no, ordered that he be stoned to death at a place called Musalla in Medina. Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari said that he was one of those who carried out this punishment on him by pelting stones at him until he died. This hadith teaches us that Allah has set punishments for certain sins and these punishments must be carried out according to Islamic law so as not to go against Allah's will or disobey His commands. It also teaches us about repentance and how even if we have done something wrong we should still seek forgiveness from Allah through sincere repentance and not hide our sins or try to cover them up as they will eventually come out anyway.
