Sahih al-Bukhari 4907 (Book 65, Hadith 427) #4688
Unity in Diversity

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) warned against creating divisions between the Ansar and Muhajirun, and cautioned against using language that could lead to such divisions.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah: We were in a Ghazwa and a man from the emigrants kicked an Ansari (on the buttocks with his foot). The Ansari man said, "O the Ansari! (Help!)" The emigrant said, "O the emigrants! (Help)". When Allah's Messenger heard that, he said, "What is that?" They said, "A man from the emigrants kicked a man from the Ansar (on the buttocks his foot). On that the Ansar said, 'O the Ansar!' and the emigrant said, 'O the emigrants!" The Prophet said' "Leave it (that call) for it Is a detestable thing". The number of Ansar was larger (than that of the emigrants) at the time when the Prophet came to Medina, but later the number of emigrants increased'.Abdullah bin Ubai said, "Have they, (the emigrants) done so? By Allah, if we return to Medina, surely, the more honorable will expel therefrom the meaner," 'Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Let me chop off the head of this hypocrite!" The Prophet said, "Leave him, lest the people say Muhammad kills his companions:"

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect each other regardless of differences; Do not create division; Do not use language which can lead to division; Be tolerant towards each other; Show equality towards each other

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of unity among different groups of people. It was narrated by Jabir bin 'Abdullah who was part of a Ghazwa, or military expedition, when a man from the emigrants kicked an Ansari on the buttocks with his foot. The Ansari man called for help while the emigrant called for help from his own group. When Allah's Messenger heard this he said "What is that?" He then warned them against creating divisions between the two groups and cautioned them against using language that could lead to such divisions. He reminded them that at one point there were more Ansar than Muhajirin in Medina but later on their numbers increased and they should not let this create any animosity between them. Umar bin Al-Khattab wanted to chop off the head of this hypocrite but Prophet Muhammad stopped him saying it would make people think he kills his companions.
