Sahih al-Bukhari 4863 (Book 65, Hadith 384) #4645
Prostration During Recitation of Sura An-Najm

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the first Sura in which a prostration was mentioned and how the Prophet (ﷺ) prostrated while reciting it, except for one man who was later killed as an infidel.

Narrated 'Abdullah: The first Sura in which a prostration was mentioned, was Sura An-Najm (The Star). Allah's Messenger prostrated (while reciting it), and everybody behind him prostrated except a man whom I saw taking a hand-full of dust in his hand and prostrated on it. Later I saw that man killed as an infidel, and he was Umaiya bin Khalaf.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the first surah in which a prostration was mentioned. It is narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud that when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recited this surah he prostrated himself and everyone behind him followed suit except for one man named Umaiya bin Khalaf who instead took a handful of dust and prostrated on it. Later on this same man was killed as an infidel. This hadith teaches us that we should follow the example of our beloved Prophet ﷺ in all matters including prayer and worship. We should also be aware that those who do not follow his teachings will face consequences in this life and hereafter. Furthermore, we learn from this hadith that even though we may have different opinions or beliefs than others, we must still respect them as human beings regardless of their faith or lack thereof.
