Invoking Good and Evil

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) invoking good and evil upon people, and how Allah revealed to him that it was not his decision to make.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Whenever Allah's Messenger intended to invoke evil upon somebody or invoke good upon somebody, he used to invoke (Allah after bowing (in the prayer). Sometimes after saying, "Allah hears him who sends his praises to Him, all praise is for You, O our Lord," he would say, "O Allah. Save Al-Walid bin Al-Walid and Salama bin Hisham, and 'Aiyash bin Abu Rabi'a. O Allah! Inflict Your Severe Torture on Mudar (tribe) and strike them with (famine) years like the years of Joseph". The Prophet used to say in a loud voice, and he also used to say in some of his Fajr prayers, "O Allah! Curse so-and- so and so-and-so". naming some of the Arab tribes till Allah revealed:--"Not for you (O Muhammad) (but for Allah) is the decision". (3.128)

QUICK LESSONS:
Leave decisions up to God instead of taking matters into one's own hands; Be mindful of one's words when speaking about others; Trust in God's judgement .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the Prophet Muhammad's practice of invoking good or evil upon people. He would do this after bowing in prayer, saying "Allah hears him who sends his praises to Him, all praise is for You, O our Lord." He would then ask for blessings on certain people or invoke harm on others. However, when Allah revealed the verse "Not for you [O Muhammad] but for Allah is the decision," he stopped doing this as it was not his place to decide such matters. This hadith teaches us that we should leave decisions up to God and trust in His judgement rather than trying to take matters into our own hands. We should also be mindful of our words when speaking about others as we do not know what fate awaits them in the future.
