Assumption of State of Ihram for Hajj

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions assumed the state of Ihram for Hajj, and those who did not have a Hadi should regard their Ihram as Umra only. 'Ali bin Abi Talib came to perform Hajj with the same intention as that of the Prophet (ﷺ), but since they had a Hadi, he was asked to keep on the state of Ihram.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Prophet assumed the state of Ihram for Umra and Hajj, and we to assumed it for Hajj with him. When we arrived at Mecca, the Prophet said, "Whoever does not possess a Hadi should regard his Ihram for Umra only". The Prophet had a Hadi with him'.Ali bin Abi Talib came to us from Yemen with the intention of performing Hajj. The Prophet said (to him), "With what intention have you assumed the Ihram, for your wife is with us?" 'Ali said, "I assumed the Ihram with the same intention as that of the Prophet ". The Prophet said, "Keep on the state of Ihram, as we have got the Hadi".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful while assuming any religious obligation like performing pilgrimage or other rituals associated with it; be aware about your intentions behind doing so and also be considerate towards others in such matters etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how one should assume the state of Ihram for Hajj and Umra. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions assumed this state when they went to Mecca for Hajj. Those who did not have a Hadi were asked to regard their Ihram as Umra only. When Ali bin Abi Talib came from Yemen with an intention to perform Hajj, he was asked by the Prophet ﷺ if his wife was with him or not, since they already had a Hadi with them. He replied that he assumed it with same intention as that of the Prophet ﷺ, so he was told to keep on in this state. This hadith teaches us about being mindful while assuming any religious obligation like performing pilgrimage or other rituals associated with it; we must be aware about our intentions behind doing so and also be considerate towards others in such matters. It also teaches us about being respectful towards our elders and following their instructions even if we do not understand them at first instance; because Allah has given them wisdom which is beyond our understanding sometimes!
