Riyad as-Salihin 1763 (Book 17, Hadith 253) #38252
The Importance of Fasting in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised Juwairiyah bint Al-Harith (May Allah be pleased with her) to give up her fast if she had not observed it the day before or did not intend to observe it the following day.

Juwairiyah bint Al-Harith (May Allah be pleased with her), the Mother of the Believers, said that the Prophet visited her on a Friday and she was observing fast. He asked, "Did you observe fast yesterday?" She said, "No". He asked, "Do you intend to observe fast tomorrow?" She said, "No". He said, "In that case, give up your fast today". Al-Bukhari.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for consistency in religious practices; take advantage of opportunities for worshiping Allah SWT; be mindful when giving advice; be considerate towards others' feelings and circumstances.

EXPLANATIONS:
Fasting is an important part of Islamic teachings and is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a practice that Muslims are encouraged to do during the month of Ramadan as well as other days throughout the year. This hadith highlights how even if someone has missed a fast or does not plan on fasting, they should still make an effort to do so whenever possible. The Prophet's advice to Juwairiyah bint Al-Harith shows us that we should strive for consistency in our religious practices and take advantage of any opportunity we have for worshiping Allah SWT. Additionally, this hadith also teaches us about being mindful and considerate when giving advice; rather than reprimanding someone for missing a fast or not planning on fasting, the Prophet instead offered gentle guidance that would help her stay consistent in her religious practices without feeling overwhelmed or discouraged by any mistakes she may have made in the past.
