Riyad as-Salihin 1613 (Book 17, Hadith 103) #38102
The Inadvisability of Retracting Charity

SUMMARY: One should not take back charity given in the way of Allah, as it is similar to a dog eating its own vomit.

'Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I donated a horse in the way of Allah. Its new possessor did not treat it properly. I made my mind to buy it because I thought that he would sell it at a cheap price (now that it became weak and emaciated). I asked the Prophet about it, whereupon he said, "Do not buy it and do not get back your charity, for one who gets back the charity is like a dog that eats its own vomit". Al-Bukhari and Muslim

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously without expecting anything in return
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of giving charity and how one should not take it back once it has been given. Umar bin Al-Khattab was donating a horse in the way of Allah when he noticed that its new possessor was not treating it properly. He thought that he could buy it back at a cheap price since it had become weak and emaciated, but when he asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ about this, he said that one should not buy back their charity or get their donations returned as this is similar to a dog eating its own vomit. This hadith teaches us that we must be generous with our donations and give them away without expecting anything in return. We must also remember that whatever we give away will be rewarded by Allah and will never go to waste.
