The Futility of Taking Back Gifts

SUMMARY: Giving something as a gift and then getting it back is like a dog eating its own vomit.

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "He who gives something (to someone) as a gift and then gets it back (from him or her) is like a dog which eats its own vomit". Another narration is: "He who gets back his charity is like a dog which vomits and then returns to that and eats it". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give away with pure intentions without expecting anything in return
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the futility of taking back gifts or charity that one has given away. It compares this action to a dog eating its own vomit which is an unpleasant and disgusting image. This hadith serves as a reminder that when we give something away, it should be done with the intention of not expecting anything in return. We should not expect any kind of reward or recognition for our good deeds but rather do them out of pure intentions and for the sake of Allah alone. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us about humility and selflessness; we should not take pride in our good deeds but instead remain humble and generous even if no one else knows about it.
