The Significance of the Hijr in Tawaf

SUMMARY: The Hijr was enclosed to ensure that people making tawaf would encompass the original House.

Yahya related to me from Malik that he heard Ibn Shihab say that he had heard one of the people of knowledge say that the Hijr was only enclosed so that people would go beyond it as they were making tawaf, and their tawaf would therefore encompass the original House.

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform religious rituals with mindfulness and attention to detail

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith speaks about the significance of the Hijr in tawaf. Tawaf is a ritual performed by Muslims during their pilgrimage to Mecca where they circumambulate around the Kaaba seven times. This hadith explains that the area known as 'Hijr' was enclosed so that when people perform tawaf, they will be able to encompass and include it within their circumambulation of Kaaba. This is important because it ensures that all parts of Kaaba are included in tawaf and no part is left out or forgotten. It also teaches us about being mindful and conscious while performing religious rituals as even small details can have great significance.
