Musnad Ahmad 652 (Book 5, Hadith 88) #34314
The Sunnah of Witr Prayer

SUMMARY: Witr prayer is not obligatory, but it is a Sunnah established by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: Witr is not an essential like regular prayer, but it is a Sunnah that was established by the Messenger of Allah .

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform voluntary acts of worship such as witr prayer .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us that the witr prayer is not an essential part of our daily prayers like the five obligatory prayers. However, it is a sunnah that was established by the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad. A sunnah refers to an action or saying that was practiced and encouraged by the Prophet himself. It can be seen as a way to gain extra reward from Allah for following in his footsteps and doing what he did. Therefore, although witr prayer may not be compulsory for Muslims to perform every day, it is still highly recommended as it brings us closer to Allah and His beloved messenger.
