Musnad Ahmad 326 (Book 2, Hadith 232) #34007
The Importance of Truthfulness

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of truthfulness and not lying, with a warning that those who lie about the Prophet will be in Hell.

Dujain Abul-Ghusn, who was from Basrah, said: I came to Madinah and met Aslam, the freed slave of 'Umar bin al-Khattab. I said. Tell me(a report)from 'Umar. He said: I cannot, I am afraid that I will add or subtract something. If we said to 'Umar, Tell us something from the Messenger of Allah , he would say: I am afraid that I may add or subtract a letter. The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever tells a lie about me will be in Hell'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak truthfully at all times

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and warns against lying. It is narrated by Dujain Abul-Ghusn from Basrah who met Aslam, the freed slave of 'Umar bin al-Khattab. When asked to tell something from Umar, he refused because he was afraid that he may add or subtract something. The Prophet then said that whoever tells a lie about him will be in Hell. This hadith teaches us to always speak truthfully and not to lie as it can lead us to severe punishment in the hereafter. We should also take care when narrating any Hadiths or stories as we should not add or subtract anything from them as it can lead us astray and cause confusion among people.
