Honoring the Righteous

SUMMARY: The most honorable person is the one who is most righteous and Allah-fearing, followed by Prophet Joseph.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Once Allah's Messenger was asked, "Who is the most honorable amongst the people?" He said, "The most righteous (ie Allah-fearing) amongst you". They said, "We do not ask you about this". He said, "Then Joseph, the prophet of Allah".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of being righteous and God-conscious in order to be honorable. It was narrated by Abu Huraira that once, Allah's Messenger was asked who is the most honorable amongst people. He replied that it is the one who is most righteous and God-fearing. When they asked him about this again, he said then it would be Prophet Joseph. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to be pious and fear Allah in order to gain honor in this world as well as hereafter. It also shows us how highly esteemed Prophet Joseph was among all prophets for his righteousness and piety even though he was not a prophet himself but a messenger of God.
