The Meaning of Shu'ub and Qabail

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the meaning of two words in the Quran, Shu'ub and Qabail.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Regarding the Verse: 'And (We) made you into Shu'ub and Qabail (Qur'an 49:13) that Shu'uib means the big Qabail (ie nations) while the Qabail (ie tribes) means the branch tribes.
حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْكَاهِلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسِ، رضى الله عنهما‏.‏ ‏{‏وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ‏}‏ قَالَ الشُّعُوبُ الْقَبَائِلُ الْعِظَامُ، وَالْقَبَائِلُ الْبُطُونُ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Ibn 'Abbas and it explains the meaning of two words found in the Quran. The first word is "Shu'ub" which means nations or big tribes. The second word is "Qabail" which means branch tribes or smaller tribes. These two words are used to describe different groups of people living together in a certain area. It teaches us that we should respect each other's differences and live peacefully with one another regardless of our backgrounds or beliefs.
