Theft and Punishment

SUMMARY: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught that the hand of a thief should not be cut off.

It was narrated from Ibrahim bin Abdur-Rahman bin Awf that his father said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'The hand of the pilferer is not to be cut off".
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَاصِمِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُفَضَّلُ بْنُ فَضَالَةَ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ لَيْسَ عَلَى الْمُخْتَلِسِ قَطْعٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that even though theft is wrong, it should not be punished with cutting off the hand of the thief. Instead, mercy and compassion should be shown to them. This hadith also shows us that Islam is a religion of justice and mercy, as it does not condone harsh punishments for minor offenses. It also teaches us to show kindness and understanding towards those who have made mistakes in life, instead of punishing them harshly.

This hadith also encourages people to take responsibility for their actions and strive to make amends for any wrongdoings they may have committed in life. It reminds us that we are all human beings capable of making mistakes, but we must learn from our mistakes and strive to do better in the future. We must remember that no matter how bad our past may have been, there is always hope for redemption if we are willing to work hard enough for it.
