Sunan Ibn Majah 2406 (Book 15, Hadith 17) #31758
The Prophet's Generosity in Paying Debts

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ acted as a guarantor for a debtor who was unable to pay his debt and then paid the debt himself.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas: That during the time of the Messenger of Allah , a man pursued a debtor who owed him ten Dinar, and he said: "I do not have anything to give you". He (the creditor) said: "No, by Allah, I will not leave you until you pay the debt or you bring me a guarantor". Then he dragged him to the Prophet and the Prophet said to him: "How long will you wait?" He said: "One month". The Messenger of Allah said: "I will be a guarantor for him". Then he came to him at the time the Prophet had said, and the Prophet said to him: "Where did you get this from?" He said: "From a mine". He said: "There is nothing good in it," and he paid the debt for him.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the generosity and kindness of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is narrated that a man came to him with a problem; he was being pursued by someone he owed money to. He had no way of paying back this debt but the Prophet ﷺ offered to be his guarantor and wait one month for him to find the money. When he returned with it from a mine, the Prophet ﷺ refused it as it was not good enough and instead paid off his debt himself. This story teaches us about how generous and kind our beloved prophet was towards those in need; even if they were strangers or people who could not repay him back in any way. It also shows us that we should always strive to help those around us who are struggling financially or otherwise so that we can emulate our beloved prophet's example in this regard.
