Sunan Ibn Majah 2407 (Book 15, Hadith 18) #31759
Praying for the Deceased

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that when a person dies, they owe a debt to Allah and it is important to pray for them.

It was narrated that 'Uthman bin 'Abdullah bin Mawhab said: "I heard 'Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrate from his father that a corpse was brought to the Prophet for him to offer the funeral prayer, and he said: 'Pray for your companion, for he owes a debt'. Abu Qatadah said: 'I will stand surely for him?' The Prophet said: 'In full?' He said: 'In full". And the debt he owed was eighteen or nineteen Dirham".

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray on behalf of deceased people with kindness and respect .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of praying for those who have passed away. It was narrated by Uthman bin Abdullah bin Mawhab that he heard Abdullah bin Abu Qatadah narrate from his father that a corpse was brought to the Prophet for him to offer the funeral prayer. The Prophet asked if Abu Qatadah would stand in full prayer for him and he said yes. The debt owed by this person was eighteen or nineteen Dirhams which is an amount of money in Islamic culture. This hadith teaches us that even though someone has passed away, we should still pray for them as they owe a debt to Allah which can only be paid through our prayers on their behalf. We should also remember those who have passed away with kindness and respect as we are all indebted to Allah in some way or another.
