Sunan Ibn Majah 2385 (Book 14, Hadith 11) #31737
The Gift of Giving

SUMMARY: Taking back a gift is not a good thing and it is similar to going back to vomit.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: "The one who takes back his gift is like the one who goes back to his vomit".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously with no expectations or conditions attached

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, teaches us that taking back a gift is not something that should be done. It compares taking back a gift to going back to vomit, which is an unpleasant image. This comparison shows us how bad it can be when someone takes something they have given away. It also teaches us the importance of giving gifts without expecting anything in return and being generous with our possessions. We should give freely and without any strings attached so that we can experience the joy of giving without any expectations or conditions attached.

Giving gifts can bring joy and happiness into our lives as well as those around us, but if we take them back then it defeats the purpose of giving in the first place. We should strive to give generously and with no expectations so that we can experience true joy from our acts of kindness towards others.
