Sunan Ibn Majah 2384 (Book 14, Hadith 10) #31736
The Likeness of Taking Back Gifts

SUMMARY: Taking back a gift is like a dog eating and vomiting its food, then going back to eat it again.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: "The likeness of one who takes back his gift is that of a dog that eats until it is full and vomits; then it goes back to its vomit and eats it again".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with your gifts; don't take them away from people once you have given them away; respect others' feelings when giving or taking something away from them; show gratitude for what you receive.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the comparison between taking back a gift and the behavior of a dog. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that someone who takes back their gift is like a dog that eats until it is full, vomits, and then goes back to eat its vomit again. This hadith teaches us that taking back gifts can be seen as an act of greediness or selfishness. It also shows us how important it is to be generous with our gifts and not take them away from people once we have given them away. We should also remember that if we do take something away from someone, they may feel hurt or betrayed by our actions.
