Sunan Ibn Majah 1238 (Book 5, Hadith 436) #30590
Following the Imam During Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that when leading prayer, the Imam should be followed and all actions should be done in unison.

It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet fell from his horse and he suffered some lacerations on his right side. We went to visit him and the time for prayer came. He led us in prayer sitting down, and we prayed behind him sitting down. When he finished the prayer he said: "The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he says Allahu Akbar, then say Allahu Akbar; when he bows, then bow; when he says Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah, then say Rabbana wa lakal-hamd; when he prostrates then prostrate; and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow your appointed leader's movements during prayer

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of following an appointed leader during prayer. The Prophet Muhammad fell from his horse and was injured, yet he still led his followers in prayer while sitting down. He then instructed them to follow him by saying “Allahu Akbar” when he said it, bowing when he bowed, and prostrating when he prostrated. He also taught them that if the leader prays sitting down then they should pray sitting down as well. This hadith emphasizes the importance of unity and synchronizing our actions with those of our leaders during prayer. It is important to remember that we are all part of a larger community and must work together to achieve success in our worship of Allah SWT.
