Sunan Ibn Majah 1237 (Book 5, Hadith 435) #30589
Following the Imam in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his companions that when the Imam is leading prayer, they should follow him and do as he does.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "The Messenger of Allah fell ill and some of his Companions came to visit him. The Messenger of Allah performed prayer while sitting down, and they prayed behind him standing up. He gestured them to sit down, and when he finished he said: 'The Imam is appointed to be followed. When he bows, then bow; when he stands up again, then stand up, and if he prays sitting down then pray sitting down.’"

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how to pray in congregation. When the imam is leading prayer, it is important for all of those praying behind him to follow his lead and do as he does. If he bows down during prayer then everyone else should bow down too and if he stands up then everyone else should stand up too. Even if the imam prays while sitting down then everyone else should also sit down while praying. This hadith emphasizes that it is important to follow the imam when praying in congregation so that all of those who are praying can be unified in their actions and intentions. It also teaches us about respect for authority figures such as an imam or a teacher who leads a group of people in any activity or task.
