Even and Odd Rakats in Salat

SUMMARY: The Prophet was asked about the number of Rakats in Salat, to which he replied that it can be even or odd.

Imran bin Husain narrated that: The Prophet was asked about Ash-Shafi, so he said: "It is As-Salat, some of it is Shaf (even) and some of it is Witr (odd)".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَفْصٍ، عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، وَأَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ عِصَامٍ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ، مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ سُئِلَ عَنِ الشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ هِيَ الصَّلاَةُ بَعْضُهَا شَفْعٌ وَبَعْضُهَا وَتْرٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ لاَ نَعْرِفُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ حَدِيثِ قَتَادَةَ ‏.‏ وَقَدْ رَوَاهُ خَالِدُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ الْحُدَّانِيُّ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ أَيْضًا

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about the number of Rakats in prayer. It is narrated by Imran bin Husain that the Prophet was asked about Ash-Shafi, to which he replied that it can be either even or odd. This means that when performing prayer, one can choose between an even or an odd number of Rakats. For example, one could perform two Rakats for Fajr prayer and three for Maghrib prayer. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our prayers and to make sure we are following the correct amount as prescribed by Islam. It also encourages us to take time out from our day-to-day lives and dedicate some time towards worshipping Allah through prayer.
