Allah's Promise of Forgiveness and Success

SUMMARY: Allah has promised to forgive the sins of believers and grant them success in this life and the hereafter.

Narrated Anas May Allah be pleased with him: "While the Messenger of Allah was returning from Al-Hudaibiyah it was revealed to him, 'That Allah may forgive you your sins of the past and the future (48:2)'. So the Prophet said: 'An Ayah has been revealed to me which is dearer to me than whatever is upon the earth'. Then the Prophet recited it for them and they said: 'Congratulations O Messenger of Allah! Allah has explained what He will do with you, but what will He do with us?' So (the following) was revealed: 'That He may admit the believing men and the believing women into Gardens under which rivers flow' up to (His Saying) 'a supreme success (48:5)'."

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a promise from Allah to believers that He will forgive their past and future sins. The Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him] was returning from Al-Hudaibiyah when he received this revelation. Upon hearing it he said that it was dearer to him than anything else on earth. When his companions asked what would happen to them they were told that they too would be admitted into gardens under which rivers flow if they were true believers. This hadith teaches us that if we are true believers then we can expect forgiveness from Allah as well as success in this life and the hereafter. We should strive to live our lives according to His teachings so that we may receive these blessings from Him.
