Sahih al-Bukhari 27 (Book 2, Hadith 20) #27
Distributing Zakat with Fear of Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) distributed Zakat among a group of people, leaving out one man whom Sa'd thought was the best of the lot. The Prophet (ﷺ) explained that he gave to a person while another was dearer to him, for fear that he might be thrown on his face in the Fire by Allah.

Narrated Sa'd: Allah's Messenger distributed (Zakat) amongst (a group of) people while I was sitting there but Allah's Messenger left a man whom I thought the best of the lot. I asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! Why have you left that person? By Allah I regard him as a faithful believer". The Prophet commented: "Or merely a Muslim". I remained quiet for a while, but could not help repeating my question because of what I knew about him. And then asked Allah's Messenger , "Why have you left so and so? By Allah! He is a faithful believer". The Prophet again said, "Or merely a Muslim". And I could not help repeating my question because of what I knew about him. Then the Prophet said, "O Sa'd! I give to a person while another is dearer to me, for fear that he might be thrown on his face in the Fire by Allah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Give charity/help with mindfulness and carefulness; Do not judge others based on assumptions or opinions; Have reverence for God's judgement

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about distributing zakat among people and how it should be done with fear of Allah. It is narrated by Sa'd who witnessed the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ distributing zakat among a group of people but leaving out one man whom Sa'd thought was the best of them all. When asked why he left him out, the Prophet ﷺ replied that he gave to a person while another was dearer to him, for fear that he might be thrown on his face in the Fire by Allah. This teaches us an important lesson about being mindful and careful when giving charity or helping others as we must always do so with fear and reverence for God's judgement. We must also remember that even if someone appears outwardly good or pious, we cannot know what is in their hearts and thus should not judge them based on our own assumptions or opinions.
