Keeping Vows and Promises

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stayed away from his wives for a month, but it was only 29 days.

Anas narrated: "The Messenger of Allah vowed to stay away from his wives for a month, so he stayed in a loft for twenty-nine days. They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, your vow was for a month,' so he said: 'The month is twenty-nine (days)'."
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ آلَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مِنْ نِسَائِهِ شَهْرًا فَأَقَامَ فِي مَشْرُبَةٍ تِسْعًا وَعِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ آلَيْتَ شَهْرًا فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ الشَّهْرُ تِسْعٌ وَعِشْرُونَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of keeping one's vows and promises. It is narrated by Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet Muhammad vowed to stay away from his wives for a month. However, when he completed twenty-nine days of staying away from them they reminded him that his vow was for a month and he replied that the month is twenty-nine days. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our promises and vows as we should fulfill them in their entirety. We should also remember that Allah will hold us accountable for our actions so we must strive to keep our word even if it means going beyond what we initially promised or vowed to do. Additionally, this hadith also teaches us about patience as the Prophet Muhammad endured this difficult situation without complaint or hesitation in order to fulfill his promise.
