Sunan Abi Dawud 4896 (Book 43, Hadith 124) #25187
Patience in the Face of Insults

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching his companions to remain patient and not take revenge when insulted, but to take action if the insult persists.

Narrated Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab: While the Messenger of Allah was sitting with some of his companions, a man reviled AbuBakr and insulted him. But AbuBakr remained silent. He insulted him twice, but AbuBakr controlled himself. He insulted him thrice and AbuBakr took revenge on him. Then the Messenger of Allah got up when AbuBakr took revenge. AbuBakr said: Were you angry with me, Messenger of Allah? The Messenger of Allah replied: An angel came down from Heaven and he was rejecting what he had said to you. When you took revenge, a devil came down. I was not going to sit when the devil came down.

QUICK LESSONS:
Remain patient even if someone insults you multiple times

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that we should remain patient and not take revenge when someone insults us. We should try our best to control our anger and not let it get the better of us. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sitting with some of his companions when a man reviled AbuBakr and insulted him twice, but AbuBakr remained silent. When he insulted him thrice, AbuBakr took revenge on him. At this point, the Messenger of Allah got up as a sign that taking revenge was wrong in this situation. When asked why he got up, he said an angel came down from Heaven rejecting what was said to AbuBakr while a devil came down when he took revenge. This shows that we should be patient even if someone insults us multiple times; however, if they persist then we can take action against them as long as it is within reason and does not involve violence or any other form of harm towards them or anyone else involved in the situation.
