Sahih al-Bukhari 2597 (Book 51, Hadith 31) #2485
The Consequences of Taking Zakat Unlawfully

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) warned against taking Zakat unlawfully and promised that those who do so will be punished on the Day of Resurrection.

Narrated Abu Humaid Al-Sa'idi: The Prophet appointed a man from the tribe of Al-Azd, called Ibn 'Utbiyya for collecting the Zakat. When he returned he said, "This (ie the Zakat) is for you and this has been given to my as a present". The Prophet said, "Why hadn't he stayed in his father's or mother's house to see whether he would be given presents or not? By Him in Whose Hands my life is, whoever takes something from the resources of the Zakat (unlawfully) will be carrying it on his neck on the Day of Resurrection; if it be a camel, it will be grunting; if a cow, it will be mooing; and if a sheep, it will be bleating". The Prophet then raised his hands till we saw the whiteness of his armpits, and he said thrice, "O Allah! Haven't I conveyed Your Message (to them)?"

QUICK LESSONS:

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is warning against taking resources from the Zakat unlawfully. He explains that those who take it without permission will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. To emphasize his point, he raised his hands until they were visible and said three times “O Allah! Haven’t I conveyed Your Message?” This shows how serious he was about conveying this message to people. It is important to remember that we should not take anything from others without their permission, especially when it comes to charity or donations given for a good cause. We should also remember that Allah knows all our actions and will judge us accordingly on the Day of Judgment.
