Sahih al-Bukhari 2598 (Book 51, Hadith 32) #2486
Fulfilling Promises

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) promised Jabir a large amount of money, but he passed away before it could be given. Abu Bakr then gave Jabir three handfuls of money in his stead.

Narrated Jabir: The Prophet said to me, "I will give you so much (the Prophet pointed thrice with his hands) when funds of Bahrain will come to me". But the Prophet died before the money reached him. (When it came) Abu Bakr ordered an announcer to announce that whoever had a money claim on the Prophet or was promised to be given something, should come to Abu Bakr. I went to Abu Bakr and told him that the Prophet had promised to give me so much. On that Abu Bakr gave me three handfuls (of money).

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive to fulfill your promises and commitments even if they are difficult or inconvenient for you

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of fulfilling promises and honoring commitments. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made a promise to Jabir that he would give him a large sum of money when funds from Bahrain arrived, however the Prophet ﷺ passed away before this could happen. Despite this, Abu Bakr honored the commitment and gave Jabir three handfuls of money in his stead. This teaches us that we should always strive to fulfill our promises and commitments even if they are difficult or inconvenient for us to do so. It is also important to note that even though the amount was not as much as what was promised, Abu Bakar still honored it which shows us how important it is for us to keep our word no matter what circumstances arise.
