Sunan Abi Dawud 4498 (Book 41, Hadith 5) #24789
Mercy and Justice in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ showed mercy to a man who had killed another unintentionally, and entrusted him to the legal guardian of the slain.

Narrated AbuHurayrah: A man was killed in the lifetime of the Prophet . The matter was brought to the Prophet . He entrusted him to the legal guardian of the slain. The slayer said: Messenger of Allah, I swear by Allah, I did not intend to kill him. The Messenger of Allah said to the legal guardian: Now if he is true and you kill him, you will enter Hell-fire. So he let him go. His hands were tied with a strap. He came out pulling his strap. Hence he was called Dhu an-Nis'ah (possessor of strap).

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy where possible

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about justice and mercy in Islam. It tells us that even if someone has committed a crime, they should still be treated with mercy. In this case, the Prophet (ﷺ) entrusted the killer to the legal guardian of the slain instead of punishing him himself. He also warned that if he was found guilty then his punishment would be severe - entering Hellfire - but he still gave him a chance to prove his innocence. This shows us that justice is important in Islam but so is showing mercy when possible. We should always strive for balance between these two values when making decisions or dealing with people who have done wrong.
